The simplicity of the American Chop Suey precludes the addition of green peppers, which cannot be added without changing the flavor quite drastically from that which has been historically enjoyed in Maine. Therefore, this is the original recipe. We added some optional ingredients to make it more personal to your taste. Eventually, if you change any ingredient and the final dish has a better taste, please let us know, and we’ll try it ourselves.

The History of American Chop Suey

Nowadays, this dish is very popular in New England, also known as American Goulash. A variation is also available with the name “Chili Mac”. Regarding the history of it, the American Chop Suey has a distant relation to Amer-Itali-Chinese Cuisine and maybe the roots were in Italy or China, not in the US. But the recipe written bellow is the real and original American recipe.

As per Wikipedia’s research for American Chop Suey, this comfort food is influenced by Italian-American cuisine as well as older New England quick and practical meals like the “potato bargain” and “necessity mess”,both known as “American chop suey” because are a sometimes-haphazard hodgepodge of meat, vegetables, Italian seasonings, and because it once used rice, a base ingredient in Chinese cuisine, instead of pasta.

Is American chop suey the same as American Goulash?

Well, both recipes are the same, having the same timetables for cooking and the same ingredients. Why is the name different? Goulash is usually referred to in the midwestern and southern United States and in other regions, is known as American Chop Suey. The simple answer is YES!

Is the American Goulash Healthy?

The answer to this question is very simple. The American Goulash is very healthy due to its great veggie ingredients. If you are searching for low-fat diet recipes, this American Goulash can be included in your meal plan without having second thoughts

Does American Goulash freeze or refrigerate well?

You want to freeze or refrigerate the American Chop Suey (Goulash)? You can do it without hesitation! But remember, if you want to freeze it, this dish can be kept for up to 2 months, and if you want to refrigerate it, don’t let it in the refrigerator for more than 5-6 days.

Which is better, American Chop Suey or Chinese Chow Mein?

Being similar recipes, I am often asked which is better… Well, that depends on your taste. Regarding the sauce, the chop suey is with tomato sauce (or other variations chosen by the cook), and chow main is with soy sauce (no other variation). Another difference is that chop suey has rice or pasta as the main ingredient, chow mein has only noodles. For me, both are very tasty.

Methods on how you can serve American Chop Suey

American chop suey is served on a plate or in a bowl. Usually, it is accompanied by bread and Worcestershire sauce. This recipe will be a little heart-healthier if you drain most of the fat from the cooked ground beef and replace it with 1/4 of the amount of olive oil. The result is a healthier and less greasy dish!
